Facelift (Rhytidectomy) +/- Neck Lift
The visible signs of ageing such as lines and wrinkles, loose skin and brown spots, no longer have to be an inevitable part of getting old, and many people choose to reverse these signs with the help of face lift surgery and other surgical and non-surgical procedures. Facelift surgery, also known as rhytidectomy, is one of the most commonly requested procedures by both men and women who want to look as young as they feel. It is performed to remove or reduce the skin that has lost its natural elasticity – usually around the eyes, mouth and jaw line – smooth the skin, reduce lines and wrinkles and rejuvenate a tired-looking appearance.
The benefits of surgery:
- Increased self-confidence and self-esteem.
- Looking younger.
- Feeling rejuvenated and fresher.
- Ability to wear clothes with lower necklines – no longer the need to hide behind a scarf / high-necked top.
- Easier application of make-up.
There are generally two main types of face lift surgery; traditional and minimal access cranial suspension (MACS) surgery. A third much less invasive face lift called the one stitch or Silhouette lift is also available. The most suitable and which will produce the best results will be discussed – details of each procedure can be found below. For many people, combining a facelift with neck lift surgery ensures that the overall appearance is rejuvenated and patients who undergo this combination of procedures have reported looking 10 years younger.
TRADITIONAL FACELIFT
In a traditional facelift a surgical incision will be made along your hairline, down past the front of your ears and into the hairline behind the ears. Because of the careful positioning of the incision, your scarring will be hidden within the hair and natural creases of the face and it will fade quickly until it is barely visible. Once the incision has been made the skin is carefully separate from the underlying tissue, before repositioning excess fat and tightening facial muscles. The skin will then be lifted and stitched into place along the original incision and any excess skin removed.
Once the surgery is complete, your face will be wrapped in bandages to prevent infection and to support your face while the skin heals, but these will usually be removed the day before you are allowed to go home from hospital. Drains will also be stitched into place behind the ears to allow excess blood and fluids to drain from the area – these are sometimes left in for the first few days but this is decided on a case-by-case basis.
MINIMAL-ACCESS CRANIAL SUSPENSION (MACS)
The main difference between this type of facelift surgery and the traditional method is that the incisions made are smaller and the tightening of facial muscles and removal of excess fat is done through these small surgical incisions. Excess fat can also be removed using this facelift procedure.
