Traditional Ear Pinning / Prominent Ears (Pinnaplasty / Otoplasty)
The operation involves shaping the skin and cartilage behind the ear so that it naturally sits back to look less prominent. The operation usually lasts between 1-2 hours under a general anaesthetic. An incision is made in the back of the ear hidden from view.
Ear Pinning or pinnaplasty is best carried out after a child is six years old. Children of this age usually have the operation under a general anaesthetic, but older children might prefer to have a local anaesthetic instead. The operation can be carried out on older children or even adults, but as we grow older the cartilage in our ears becomes stiffer.
